Youth interested in summer employment should prepare now through Goodwill's Youth Job Connection. As employers begin the hiring process for seasonal help, Charlotte youth ages 14 to 21 have access to free resources on all aspects of the job search. “Youth looking to work this summer should act now by starting the job search process,” said Michael Elder, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont. “Going through the Youth Job Connection not only prepares them for a work environment, but improves their chances on the job search. Youth also have access to employers who are working closely with Goodwill for their recruiting.” The Youth Job Connection – a partnership with the City of Charlotte – operates out of Goodwill’s Career Development Center, 2122 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. In addition to access to computers, internet, phone and fax, youth have the option of attending workshops, including job readiness, resume writing, customer service, personal finance and retail essentials.
Youth also have the ability to meet one-on-one with a career counselor to develop an individual action plan. Career counselors can also support and mentor youth on the best approach, tools and techniques to use in their job search. “Our programs are unique in that we’re not just preparing our youth for their summer job, but we’re teaching them skills that will benefit them for the rest of their life,” Elder said. Seventeen-year-old Michael Johnson Jr. of Charlotte found success on the job search after going through the Youth Job Connection. The 17-year-old Central Piedmont Community College student uses his new job at Domino’s Pizza to help pay for school and books. “I am glad I started the job search early by coming to the Youth Job Connection. It gave me a one-up before everyone else,” Johnson said. “I initially didn’t know about a cover letter and sending a thank you note after a job interview. When I finished the program, I felt I had the skills that employers wanted.” The Youth Job Connection is open from 12-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 12-4:30 p.m. on Friday.
