McAlpine Elementary Students See Donations Brought To Life

On February 4, three months after students at McAlpine Elementary organized a successful donation drive for Goodwill, 90 of the school’s fifth graders had a chance to see their donations put to work.

Getting a glimpse of Goodwill’s job training and employment programs, a tour of the agency's electronic recycling facility, and even a chance to meet a real life Goodwill success story, the students were excited to see that their donations truly made a difference in the Charlotte community.

“I was surprised to see the number of donations,” said one student. Another was happy to see that the clothes they had donated “helped people get jobs,” a point that was driven home when almost every hand was raised after the students were asked if they had a friend or family member who is currently unemployed.

The group, full of aspiring doctors, lawyers, police officers and professional sports players, was encouraged by Goodwill career development specialist Annette Goodman to choose a career path—not just a job. And Shell Richardson, a Goodwill success story, shared her path to success through Goodwill’s Hospitality program; she graduated with three job offers. “I go to work excited every day,” Richardson said.

The visit was an eye-opening experience for the McAlpine Elementary students, sharing the growing needs in our community and how one donation can have an impact.
