A native of El Salvador, Bessy moved from Los Angeles to Charlotte to find a better place to raise her two daughters. She found Goodwill by accident when she went there to meet an employer about a position.
“The employer did not show up, but I was there at the right place!” Bessy explained. “I was amazed to discover the employment services and training programs that Goodwill offers.”
At the Job Connection, Bessy learned about Goodwill’s occupational skills training programs for careers in the banking, construction, customer service and hospitality industries.
“I was excited that Goodwill’s training would help me find a job with a future in Charlotte,” Bessy said.
Bessy began Goodwill’s rigorous, hands-on Careers in Banking program in September 2005.
“It was more than what I expected. I loved working on the machines in the banking laboratory,” Bessy said. “I also learned so much from the volunteers from the banking and business community. They not only shared their time and knowledge, they also took the time to provide motivation and encouragement.”
Bessy had three job offers when she graduated in December 2005, and she chose to begin her banking career at the Charlotte Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.
Bessy was honored at Goodwill’s 2008 Cornerstone Celebration, where she received a Good Work! Award. Click here to watch Bessy receive her award and hear her inspiring words.
“Now, because of Goodwill, my self esteem and motivation are better,” Bessy said. “When we are good inside and out, good things happen to our life, energy flows and people see it. Anyone can set and achieve their goals if you work hard.”
Today, she continues working as a data entry specialist at the Federal Reserve. Bessy also gives tours and was recently honored as Tour Guide of the Year.
“Now, it’s my turn to help others,” Bessy said.
Bessy is giving back to the community by volunteering as a mentor at Goodwill to students from the Latino community. She also attends graduation ceremonies to cheer on those who are following in her footsteps in the banking industry.
