Goodwill Receives Grant to Expand Career Development Training Program

A graduate from Goodwill's Hospitality & Tourism Training program celebrates her success

The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation has awarded Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont a $50,000 grant to expand the organization’s AchieveGlobal Program. The grant will allow the organization to offer AchieveGlobal curriculum and training to all of its Occupational Skills Training (OST) participants.

Wachovia/Wells Fargo certified volunteers have delivered AchieveGlobal Work Skills curriculum to students participating in the Banking & Customer Service training program since 2004. With support from the grant, Goodwill is able to offer AchieveGlobal Work Skills curriculum to the Hospitality & Tourism training program participants as well. Goodwill hopes to include participants of the Construction & Green Jobs training program in the near future.

“Through our partnership with Wachovia/Wells Fargo, the individuals we serve are exposed to practical instruction by industry professionals, giving them the confidence they need to face a challenging job environment,” said Michael Elder, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont. “Taught by trained Wachovia/Wells Fargo instructors, the AchieveGlobal curriculum has become integral to the success of our OST programs.”

Each participant who completes the prescribed coursework is awarded an AchieveGlobal Work Skills certificate of completion. The seven-week curriculum consists of seven modules which help OST participants develop planning, problem solving, creative thinking and teamwork skills.

“At Wachovia/Wells Fargo, we believe in helping to build strong and vibrant communities through long-term workforce development and leadership opportunities,” said Jay Everette, Community Affairs Manager for The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation. “Goodwill is doing great work as an advocate for individuals that want to enter or re-enter the workforce in the Charlotte region. We recognize the impact of the AchieveGlobal curriculum for Goodwill’s Occupational Skills Training program participants, and are proud to support the expansion of these programs.”

Last year, 354 individuals graduated from Goodwill’s OST programs. Overall, Goodwill helped nearly 15,000 people in local communities with their job searches in 2010.
